Louis Vuurpijl

After studying computer science, I got my PhD in 1998 for a study on neural networks, parallel processing and neurosimulators. For the application of parallel neural network simulations, I have been involved in various forms of image processing and neural network based image recognition such as the detection of ground cover classes in satellite imagery. The use of ``cooperative information processing'' as a paradigm for pattern recognition has my ongoing attention. Example problems in this area are the combination of different classifiers for the recognition of handwritten text, the combination of methods for finding information in large (image) databases on the Internet, and perceptual user-interfaces as in multi-modal HCI. I have been affiliated with the DCC (former NICI) since 1995, doing research on pen-computing, pen-based image retrieval, online handwriting recognition, multimodal interaction, and forensic writer identification. Since January 2001, I lecture a course on neural networks, an introductory and advanced course on human-computer interaction, and (since 2002) robotics .
