upWorks Documentation

Introduction

This document serves as a manual for the UNIPEN visualization and manipulation tool upWorks; a tool which enables you to process on-line handwritten data coming from XY digitizers or pen computers. The software as such is not intended for handling off-line (i.e., optically scanned) handwriting data. You can start the UNIPEN software by typing 'upWorks filename' on the command line. The input file must be in the UNIPEN data format. For example:

  upworks data/test.dat

When you have started the application, you will see the main screen. This screen might look like:

The menu structure will always consist of (minimally) the items File and Options. The other - rightmost - menu items that you see are generated by the hierarchy which is defined in the UNIPEN data file. For example, the UNIPEN data file may contain the next statement:

The hierarchy one can define is indefinite and dependent on the user.
Alternatively, one could create a hierarchy like:

The elements within the hierarchy are called .SEGMENTs in the UNIPEN file format and jargon (often pronounced as 'dot-segments').

Basic concepts of the User Interface

The user interface consists of the following basic components:

Menu bar

The menu bar or menu structure always exists in the items File and Options. The other menu items you see are generated by the hierarchy which is defined in the UNIPEN data file (see above).
The Menu page gives an overview of the main menu structure of the main screen

Main screen

The main screen depicts all segments at a certain hierarchy level. The hierarchy level is shown in the menu bar. Below follows a description of possible actions by means of:

mouse buttons

Segment Viewer

Note that there is only one segment viewer, but it will be visible to the user with a window name which depends on the selected hierarchy level. In this introduction we only discuss the segment viewer in the disguise of a word viewer. Using the segment viewer gives you the possibility of a more detailed evaluation of the UNIPEN segments.
The segment viewer always indicates the selected level within the hierarchy. This hierarchy can be defined by the user.

There are two possibilities to pop up a segment viewer. The first is by selecting a segment in the main screen with the mouse pointer and push the middle mouse button and the second is by means of the menu. If you place the mouse pointer on one of the hierarchical segment items in the menu bar you'll be prompted to make a selection. You can make a selection by double clicking a list item in the selection window. The corresponding segment viewer will then be popped up.

The segment viewer in UNIPEN is divided in a left part and a right part. When you take a close look, you'll see that the segment viewer is a pane window. The left part of a segment viewer gives you information about the contents of the segments and enables you to pop up the segment manipulator for segmentation and labeling functions. These functions enable you to edit the data files and change the hierarchy. The right part of the window contains parameters which give you information about the left part of the window.

Actions you can perform by means of:

mouse buttons

The segment viewer page describes the segment viewer in more detail (as a word viewer in the examples).

Parameter modification dialog

The Parameters page gives an overview of all parameters and how to modify their values. Furthermore this page describes the different signal types.

Segment manipulator

The segment manipulator page describes the segment manipulator with which you may enter new .SEGMENTs or modify and adjust existing .SEGMENTs.
